Grow Down
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
-Colossians 2:6-8
We want students to come to know Jesus and be firmly rooted in their faith. Not a faith in church, in their pastor, or in their youth group, but a faith in Jesus. For this reason we preach the Gospel at every opportunity and we dig into the main way Jesus has revealed Himself to us, His word. We will not teach self help or simple moralism but we will dig into the scriptures at every opportunity. The goal of this is to create real faith in students in the real Jesus that lasts the storms of life they are guaranteed to experience, and like a tree firmly rooted stand strong.
Grow Up
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 6:5-9
Students are growing up, whether we help or not, getting older and changing. As they grow up we hope to do life alongside students and teach them the things of God, “as we go.” Opportunities to speak into students lives will arise, but only if we know whats happening in their lives. To help with an as we go approach we engage with what is already happening in students lives. This is best accomplished by attending sporting events and other extra curricular activities.
As students grow in ability and maturity we want to encourage them to pursue their talents, empower them to lead in whatever way they can, and enable them to practice these skills in a safe environment under the supervision and with the assistance of an adult that wants the student to succeed.
Grow Out
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
-Matthew 18:19-20
…that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God,
-Psalm 78: 6-7
As Christians we are called to spread the Gospel, share the Good News of Christ Crucified. So we intend to reach whoever we can with this hope, and enable students to do so as well. Teaching the next generation so that they can teach the next. Like a tree that bears fruit and propagates into a forest.
